President Trump hit at Joe Biden’s record on trade during his speech at the Republican National Convention, accusing him of sending working class jobs overseas to China while building his political career on the support of blue collar workers. “For forty-seven years, Joe Biden took the donations of blue collar workers, gave them hugs and even kisses,” Trump said, to laughter from the crowd assembled on the front lawn of the White House. Biden “told them he felt their pain, then voted to send their jobs to China.”

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Seventy-four people are now facing federal charges related to protests that have rocked Portland, Oregon, for three months since George Floyd was killed. The misdemeanor and felony charges include assaults on federal officers, arson and damaging federal property. Billy Williams, the U.S. attorney for Oregon, said in a statement Thursday that “violent agitators” had “hijacked” the First Amendment. Portland has been gripped by nightly protests since the police killing of Floyd in Minneapolis.

Peggy Noonan joined the crowd turning on George W. Bush in what I thought was (in Noonan’s case) a grossly unfair manner in 2008. It wasn’t just unfair, it was cowardly. I wrote critically about one of Noonan’s weekly Wall Street Journal columns in which she identified with the public disapproval of Bush that April in “Season of the witch.” Having turned on George W. Bush, Noonan moved on to support the election of Barack Obama later that year. Noonan all but endorsed Obama in her 2008 column “Obama and the runaway train.”

Scott’s post about Peggy Noonan, and in particular her writing about Kamala Harris, reminded me of Noonan’s treatment of another candidate for Vice President, Sarah Palin. Noonan’s utterances about Palin in 2008, which I described here, fit well within the unfortunate pattern Scott describes. Noonan’s first published take on Palin was basically the Republican Party line at the time —that the nominee represents “a real and present danger to the American left” which therefore needs to “kill” her. That’s what she wrote in the Wall Street Journal. But it wasn’t what she believed. How do we know?

President Donald Trump’s younger brother, Robert Trump, a businessman known for an even keel that seemed almost incompatible with the family name, died Saturday night after being hospitalized in New York, the president said in a statement. He was 71. The president visited his brother at a New York City hospital on Friday after White House officials said he had become seriously ill. “It is with heavy heart I share that my wonderful brother, Robert,

NEW YORK (AP) — Michael Cohen’s memoir about President Donald Trump will be released Sept. 8 by Skyhorse Publishing, which confirmed the news Thursday to The Associated Press. The book is called “Disloyal: The True Story of the Former Personal Attorney to President Donald J. Trump.” “‘Disloyal’ is the most devastating business and political horror story of the century,” according to a Skyhorse statement shared with the AP. “It is a story that you haven’t read in newspapers, or on social media, or watched on television. These are accounts that only someone who worked for Trump around the clock for a decade — not a few months

2020 saved its weirdest twist for August: Jared Kushner’s going to win a Nobel prize. They’ll never give it to Trump, not even if he negotiates world peace. But Jared, the White House’s foremost Democrat, might be acceptable to the committee.
His most intriguing comments this morning after normalized relations between Israel and the UAE were announced haven’t been noticed much elsewhere, to my surprise: “There is a good chance that another country could make a deal with Israel in the coming days,” Kushner said at the White House. Speaking to reporters after he unveiled the historic agreement, Trump suggested more diplomatic breakthroughs between Israel and its Muslim

It’s hard to know what’s worse — the dying or the lying. More than 32,000 New Yorkers have died from the coronavirus, a toll higher than any other state. New York also ranks second to the worst out of all 50 states, in deaths per million residents. Only New Jersey did worse. You wouldn’t know it, listening to Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who brags that his administration “tamed the beast.” Or the media that praise him and chide states with much, much lower death rates.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio. The hizzoner. “Comrade Bill,” to some detractors, “Big Bird” to others, NSFW descriptors, among the most ardent of his opponents. No matter what you call NYC’s 109th mayor, he has managed to anger nearly everyone in The Big Apple at some point during his 2,413 days in office. Including a NY U.S. congressman, but we’ll get to him in a bit.

A horrific shootout outside a funeral home on Chicago’s South Side Tuesday night wounded at least 14 people, police said, in the latest chapter of violence gripping the big city. “All we saw was just bodies laying everywhere,” witness Arnita Gerder told WMAQ. “Shot up everywhere, all over. Legs, stomach, back, all over the place. We thought it was a war out here.” A vehicle was traveling on 79th Street when people inside opened fire on funeral attendees, the Chicago Police Department’s First Deputy Superintendent Eric Carter said during a news briefing. The attendees exchanged gunfire with the vehicle, which sped off before crashing a short distance later.

You want an example of pure media gaslighting? Democrats and media have been going all in with the crazy story that federal authorities sent “unidentified troops” into Portland to snatch random poor innocent people off the streets. (snip) Now of course, this is insane. They’re DHS folks, mostly Customs and Border Patrol, who are able to operate within 100 miles of the border, which includes Portland, helping out the Federal Protective Service who protect federal buildings and property. They had DHS badges and POLICE across their vests.
