Shoppers Drug Mart and its parent company, Loblaw, are expanding asymptomatic testing for COVID-19 to all of their pharmacies across Alberta starting next month.
The province announced Tuesday all 234 locations operated by the two companies that have a pharmacy will offer testing as of Sept. 1. This includes pharmacies at Real Canadian Superstore, Independent Foods, Extra Foods, City Market and No Frills. Asymptomatic testing was already being offered at more than 50 locations operated by Shoppers Drug Mart and Loblaw.
The latest expansion is in addition to the testing being done by Alberta Health Services and 75 other community pharmacies.
To date, there have been more than 837,000 tests completed across the province.
Alberta’s chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw said she’s thankful for the two companies expanding testing to every community.
“Overall, it increases Alberta’s testing capacity by about 3,000 to 4,000 tests a day,” she said during Tuesday’s update. “That would serve half or more of Alberta’s teachers and school staff. We will need this added capacity plus all of our community pharmacists who are already testing for COVID-19.”
