When photojournalists David Bloom and Greg Southam started the essential workers portrait project over two months ago, their goal was to put faces to the people who selflessly continued to work while many others stayed home to help stop the spread of COVID-19.
These men and women had to report to work even though they were putting themselves and their families at risk. In doing so, they became heroes within our community.
During the portrait sessions, they were asked to think about how they felt during the first few weeks of the pandemic and try to express those feelings for the camera. There were moments when people became emotional as they relived the fear, and in some cases, the fear is still with them as they do their jobs to make the lives of others better.
We are incredibly grateful to everyone who took the time to have their portraits taken and acknowledge that we only managed to capture a small percentage of our community’s essential workers.
