California Gov. Gavin Newsom has pointed out that the state’s wildfires are located primarily on federal land — and he’s right — but now he and other Democratic governors are trying to block the Trump administration’s effort to speed up the clearing of overgrown, tinder-dry forests. Twenty-three states, including California, Oregon and Washington, sued last month to stop the National Environmental Policy Act modernization(skip)
(skip) critics accused California Democrats of putting their loyalty to the environmental movement and focus on climate change ahead of proven strategies for forest health.

When Hollywood actors open their mouths, we’re used to hearing overwrought, vapid attacks on conservatives and, especially, against Donald Trump. Whether it’s Rob Reiner, Cher, Barbra Streisand, or all those actors who make public service videos in which they look earnest and promise to do or believe whatever the latest leftist orthodoxy demands, Hollywood types almost invariably debase public discourse. There are exceptions, such as James Woods and Patricia Heaton. And this week, Jim Caviezel is the Hollywood actor who showed philosophical depth about the war of values being waged in America.

A woman suspected of sending an envelope containing the poison ricin, which was addressed to the White House, has been arrested at the New York-Canada border and is also suspected of sending similar poisoned envelopes to law enforcement agencies in Texas, officials said Monday. The letter had been intercepted earlier this week before it reached the White House. The woman was taken into custody by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Peace Bridge border crossing near Buffalo and is expected to face federal charges, three law enforcement officials told The Associated Press.

Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden’s plan to increase the capital gains tax could lead to a large-scale sell-off of stocks, according to economic analyses. As part of his $4 trillion tax plan, Biden has proposed increasing the top tax rate for capital gains for the highest earners to 39.6% from 23.8%, the largest real increase in capital gains rates in history. Economic analyses show that capital gains tax hikes cause a burst of stock-selling in advance of the increase, as investors look to lock in the lower existing tax rates before they rise.

With precision and boundless energy, a team of carpenters used medieval techniques to raise up — by hand — a three-ton oak truss Saturday in front of Notre Dame Cathedral, a replica of the wooden structures that were consumed in the landmark’s devastating April 2019 fire that also toppled its spire. The demonstration to mark European Heritage Days gave the hundreds of people a first-hand look at the rustic methods used 800 years ago to build the triangular frames in the nave of Notre Dame de Paris. It also showed that the decision to replicate the cathedral in its original form was the right one,

President Donald Trump has said federal agents have quelled tensions in Kenosha, and suggested that their deployment could also ease unrest in Portland. The Wisconsin city became the latest flashpoint in protests over police brutality and racism following the police shooting of Jacob Blake in front of his three children on Sunday, with widespread looting and arson taking place. While an initial offer of federal help was rejected, Democratic governor Tony Evers accepted the assistance following the shooting deaths of two protesters. Kyle Rittenhouse, 17, has been charged with their murders. Around 1,000 National Guard and 200 federal

Faith is on the decline nowadays, and it is no wonder. Most people in these postmodern times are convinced that it’s impossible to know anything with settled certainty — so they can’t really believe anything, either. When you aren’t even sure whether objective truth exists, the suggestion that there is something to believe in simply doesn’t make any sense. Begin with the assumption that nothing can be known for sure, and religious convictions are automatically out of the question. In case you hadn’t realized it, that kind of thinking now dominates our society.

Some bad breath just can’t be covered up.
Now that dentists have reopened their doors, they’re having patients show up with a nasty set of symptoms, which the doctors have dubbed “mask mouth.” The new oral hygiene issue — caused by, you guessed it, wearing a mask all the time to prevent the spread of the coronavirus — is leading to all kinds of dental disasters like decaying teeth, receding gum lines and seriously sour breath. “We’re seeing inflammation in people’s gums that have been healthy forever, and cavities in people who have never had them before,”

An economics professor at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, says the school has repeatedly denied his request to teach an elective class critical of Marxism to the general student body. “Clearly, it’s all just censorship,” Wright State economics professor Evan Osborne told Fox News. “I have proposed several electives. All have been approved, not going against the sacred beliefs of the radical wing of our department.”
Only honors students will be allowed to take Osborne’s class “Marxism: A History of Theory and Practice” despite his requests that it be opened to any student, The College Fix first reported.

If only mobs were allowed to destroy federal property without consequence. Then, there wouldn’t have to be any dispute over federal agents defending a federal courthouse in Portland, Ore.; it could simply be over-run and burned to the ground with no unwelcome resistance from the government. As it is, Portland’s mayor, Ted Wheeler, who presides over a city that has become a watchword over the years for left-wing thuggery unchecked by municipal authorities, has roused himself to a state of high dudgeon — over federal officers trying to counter ongoing assaults on a federal building.
