California Governor Gavin Newsom announced Wednesday that the state will ban sales of gas-powered vehicles, effective in 2035. Newsom said that the “audacious” goal was necessary to achieve the state’s goal of 100% renewable energy by 2045. Newsom said that his new executive order would “eliminate” the sales of “internal combustion engines” and move to electric vehicles — a move that he said would create jobs and allow California to “dominate” the market, and address climate change. Those who currently own gas-powered vehicles would still be allowed to operate them and to sell them on the used market.

“Mean Girls” actor Jonathan Bennett will star in Hallmark’s first LGBTQ-themed holiday movie, “The Christmas House,” the network announced Wednesday. About two months ago, the Hallmark Channel announced that its 2020 holiday movie selection would include LGBTQ storylines, characters and actors. Now, the television cable channel is making good on its promise.
“Our holiday table is bigger and more welcoming than ever,” Michelle Vicary, the executive VP of programming at Crown Media, Hallmark’s parent company, said Wednesday. “This year’s movies reflect our most diverse representation of talent, narratives, and families, including ‘The Christmas House’, featuring a storyline about a gay couple looking to adopt their first child,

As the Senate prepares for yet another brutal Supreme Court nomination fight, one particularly sensitive issue is creating apprehension among Democrats: what to do with 87-year-old Sen. Dianne Feinstein, the ranking member of the Judiciary Committee. Feinstein, the oldest member of the Senate, is widely respected by senators in both parties, but she has noticeably slowed in recent years. Interviews with more than a dozen Democratic senators and aides show widespread concern over whether the California Democrat is capable of leading the aggressive effort Democrats need against whoever President Donald Trump picks to replace the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

WASHINGTON— President Donald Trump on Wednesday again declined to commit to a peaceful transfer of power if he loses the Nov. 3 presidential election.“We’re going to have to see what happens,” Trump said at a news conference, responding to a question about whether he’d commit to a peaceful transfer of power. “You know that I’ve been complaining very strongly about the ballots, and the ballots are a disaster.”It is highly unusual that a sitting president would express less than complete confidence in the American democracy’s electoral process. But he also declined four years ago to commit to honoring the election results if his Democratic opponent, Hillary Clinton, won.

Mars Inc. has renamed its Uncle Ben’s rice products “Ben’s Original,” making it the latest food producer to ditch a brand steeped in racist imagery. The Virginia-based company is also scrapping the portrait of a white-haired black man that has adorned its rice boxes for decades—an image that’s long been criticized as a racist stereotype. “We’re still in the process of deciding on what our new iconography will be, but are committed to ensuring that it will be truly reflective of the inclusive future we are striving to create for Ben’s Original,” a Mars Food spokesperson said in a statement.

Will Biden Survive the First Debate? 29 replies

The first presidential debate is next Tuesday, and I don’t see Biden surviving. His campaign has been playing “hide the Crypt-Keeper” since spring, occasionally proving to the public that he’s still ticking by having him tussle with a teleprompter while “objective journalists” participate in make-believe interviews. Biden’s cognitive decline is now so steep that he begins reading pre-written answers to pre-written questions, forgets what he’s doing halfway through, and settles for stringing syllables together that sound English-y in a non–native speaker sort of way. He is a man forever in search of a thought but finding none

The Biden campaign, which has bombarded President Donald Trump with attacks about his respect for U.S. soldiers, will be campaigning this weekend with Jane Fonda, a celebrity best known for fraternizing with enemy troops during the Vietnam War. Democratic vice-presidential candidate Kamala Harris is set to join Fonda at a Saturday virtual event held by progressive advocacy group Supermajority. The event—titled “Supercharge: Women All In”—will “bring together thousands of women to laugh, sing, dance, and celebrate women’s political power,” according to the group’s website.

At the end of the 16th century, the advancing age of Queen Elizabeth I posed a throne-shakingly serious problem for England’s future. Her reign had been largely peaceful and notably prosperous, and would be looked back upon as a golden age by future generations. However, since she had no children, it was not certain who would succeed her — and rival claims to the throne had previously led to a ruinous civil war that only ended with the accession of Elizabeth’s grandfather, Henry VII. Anxiety that history could repeat itself was widespread, and can still be read between the lines of plays like Henry V and Hamlet that Shakespeare

An out of work Los Angeles director decided to make a PSA urging blacks to vote in the presidential election. Unfortunately her Get Your Booty To the Poll campaign, featuring scantily clad women gyrating around a dance pole, posted this week on YouTube, seems to have backfired. Angeles Davis, who also lives part-time in Atlanta, explained that she enlisted “the finest police dancers to encourage Black voters, specifically Black male southern voters to vote.” The response from the black community, which viewed it as an attempt to boost Biden votes, was, to put it mildly, less than enthusiastic.
