Dater is has covered the Avalanche for 25 years, twenty of those years with the Denver Post. He now runs his own site, Colorado Hockey Now.
Among the many responses to Dater’s barb was one from analytics writer Dom Luszczyszyn of The Athletic: “Might be the rest of the team’s talent deficiency and the sieve they put in net, not the best player in the world’s personality.”
Replied Dater: “Or maybe you only look at spread sheets and nothing else.”
Replied Luszczyszyn: “if i watched zero hockey games this year (for the record, i have! but nice straw man) i’m confident i would never say anything as dumb as these two tweets, so maybe pay attention to what you’re watching.”
Oilers fans also weighed in with much skepticism, making fun of Dater’s hot take:
Carly Dermott @carlydermott: I love when people talk like they know anything about athletes personally. You know what they do for a living, and how they address what they do for a living. It ends there.
scott kosman @humantorch: “He doesn’t inspire others” he says of the man that came back from a potentially career-ending injury so amazing that they made a documentary about it.
Rouel @itsrouel: Draisaitl wouldn’t be MVP caliber if not for McDavid pushing him. I’d say McDavid’s probably the most passionate player in the team and a great leader. Boring interviewer for sure as he doesn’t really care about the media. It’s all about his team.
Trizent @Wizalters: Imagine thinking how people interact with the media is how they interact with their friends and teammates.
