Alberta Health did not report the Good Samaritan death but did report one other death in the province Friday — a man in his 80s in central Alberta whose death is not related to continuing care.

Alberta Health spokesman Tom McMillan said facility operators learn of deaths before they are reported to provincial officials. He said that can cause a delay in a death being officially reported in provincial updates.

The province reported 127 new cases Friday. The number of active cases dropped to 1,386 from 1,408 reported on Thursday.

A total of 9,261 Albertans have recovered from COVID-19. There have been 10,843 confirmed cases since the beginning of the pandemic.

The Edmonton Zone has 272 active cases while the Calgary Zone has 599. Central Alberta has 254 and southern Alberta has 147. Northern Alberta sits at 107. There are seven cases that are not linked to a geographical zone.

During her Thursday update, Alberta’s chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw urged the public to continue to physical distance as they enjoy the August long weekend.

“We all want to socialize and make happy positive memories. I am confident that none of us want to have those memories spoiled with a loved one getting sick,” said Hinshaw.

She said people can still go to restaurants or the beach or get together to watch the start of playoff hockey. However, she asked for adjustments to be made to allow for everyone to remain two-metres apart.

“Protect loved ones by encouraging everyone to bring their own food and drinks and use their own utensils,” said Hinshaw. Wherever you go physically distance, wear a mask in crowded places and wash your hands.”

A bylaw making masks mandatory in Edmonton’s indoor public spaces goes into effect Saturday.

Across Canada, there have been 116,312 cases of COVID-19, show latest numbers from Health Canada. A total of 8,935 in the country have died and 101,277 people have recovered. Globally, there have been 17,106,007 cases and 668,910 deaths, reports the World Health Organization.
