When Kamala Harris takes the stage at the Democratic National Convention tonight, she’ll doubtless project an image of absolute harmony with presidential nominee Joe Biden, the man who has lifted her to newfound fame and potential great power. On Thursday night, Biden will glory in his history-making decision. The two candidates will bask in their mutual regard. But, if they’re elected, policy differences and irritations are going to arise. Vice presidents are politicians who usually got pretty far on their own, and they’re human beings; to constantly subordinate oneself to one’s boss requires exceptional discipline and self-effacement, something at which

Second only to New Jersey in deaths per capita from the coronavirus, New York has suffered more than 32,000 deaths from the pandemic overall, roughly 20,000 more than any other state in the union. And unlike other states, New York’s horrific death toll can be attributed to two specific decisions: first, Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s refusal to shut down the New York City subway system, which functioned as a petri dish of the pandemic and became a main vector of its spread, and second, his disastrous nursing home directive which forced facilities to readmit patients who tested positive for the virus

The Army is launching an investigation into two soldiers who appeared in uniform during Democratic National Convention coverage Tuesday night, the service announced Wednesday. During the broadcast, two soldiers in uniform flanked officials from American Samoa while the territory awarded its delegates during the roll call at the Democratic National Convention. The appearance goes against Defense Department regulations, which prohibit all troops from being in uniform at partisan political or campaign events. Including uniformed military personnel in the video was an “oversight,” according to a Democratic Convention official. “Each state was asked to highlight issues and values that matter most

The Democratic National Convention formally nominated Joe Biden as its presidential candidate on Tuesday night, but the roll call of states and territories also included the votes for runner-up Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.). Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), a prominent Sanders supporter, seconded his nomination, and this is how NBC News recapped her short nominating speech: “In one of the shortest speeches of the DNC, Rep. Ocasio-Cortez did not endorse Joe Biden.” After being criticized for political illiteracy, NBC News deleted the tweet and issued a clarification about how conventions work. Defying the coronavirus pandemic’s mounting human and economic toll, stocks closed Tuesday at a record high, bringing an end to the shortest bear market in U.S. history. After notching three consecutive weeks of gains, the Standard & Poor’s 500 index closed at 3,389, gaining 0.2 percent on the day. The finish capped a remarkable comeback from the March plunge that slashed 34 percent off the previous record, set Feb. 19, as the pandemic tightened its grip on the country. Investors Tuesday brushed aside worries about the nation’s continuing struggle to contain the pandemic, focusing instead on signs of strength in

Three crew of a Seattle fishing boat who were found to have antibodies able to neutralise the new coronavirus remained uninfected in an outbreak that swept through the ship, sickening most people on board, researchers have reported. The small real-world study, which has not been peer-reviewed, is among the first in humans to suggest a link between neutralising antibodies — those that stop the virus latching onto host cells — and protection from infection. Researchers from the University of Washington and Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle screened 120 of 122 people before they boarded the fishing vessel in May

Marks & Spencer has apologised after it was accused of “covert racism” over its bra colours. Kusi Kimani, 29, from East Sussex, was shocked when she discovered a brown bra on the retailer’s website was called “tobacco”. The lighter colours of the £12 Marks & Spencer Collection padded bras are described as “cinnamon” and “fudge”. Ms Kimani complained about the bra for her skin tone carrying negative connotations, while more positive words were used for lighter colours. Yet two months on from her initial complaint, the bra is still being sold in a “tobacco” colour on the Marks & Spencer

SALT LAKE CITY — Par Kermani, a first-time delegate to the Democratic National Convention, said even though the four-day event that starts Monday to formally nominate former Vice President Joe Biden as the party’s presidential candidate is being held virtually due to the coronavirus pandemic, there may be a small part for him to play. “There is going to be ‘applause.’ We were asked — I’m not sure if I’m sure if I’m supposed to be saying this — but we were asked to send a video of us in kind of applauding, showing enthusiasm and excitement. I did send

MILWAUKEE — The weekend before the Democratic Convention in Milwaukee was supposed to be full of activity. But the pandemic and a scaled-back convention has left downtown fairly quiet. “It’s been a little quiet, honestly,” said Corey Libermann. “We’re from the Madison area and for us, we thought it would be a little bit more busy.” (Snip) “It’s a little eerie, we’re kind of the only people that kind of came over here down this alleyway in front of the Bucks’ stadium,” Ghuman said. The city was expecting around 50,000 people to come through before the pandemic. Then the convention was

The Democratic National Convention is set to begin on Monday, not that you would know it if you watched any of the Sunday shows. Despite the culmination of the highly publicized veepstakes succeeding in roiling media praise and a massive fundraising haul, Joe Biden and his newly announced running mate Kamala Harris have taken an unusually guarded approach to campaign coverage, even in the midst of a global pandemic forcing much of normal campaigning to go virtual. Biden’s campaign strategy since locking down the nomination through waiting for the general election to begin in earnest has consisted largely of focus-group-tested

I saw a Tesla with #BlackLivesMatter written on the rear windshield the other day. It appeared to be a parent picking up their kid from a “pandemic pod,” which, if you’re not familiar, is a small cluster of families who pool resources to hire a private tutor, who may be a parent. These pods are very popular among my neighbors in the Bay Area of California. Nearby I could see a YMCA, which provides child care and after-school programming. It had shut down due to COVID-19. I’m not the first to point out that pods are emblematic of educational inequity

More Americans approve than disapprove of Joe Biden’s choice of Sen. Kamala Harris for the 2020 Democratic ticket by a 25-point margin, 54-29%, in a new ABC News/Washington Post poll. Approval of the pick ranges from 86-8% among Democrats to 25-55% among Republicans — notable that one in four Republicans approves. It’s 52-29% among independents, potential swing voters in presidential elections. While reaction to Harris is broadly positive, the margin narrows among those who have strong opinions. Thirty-four percent of Americans strongly approve of her selection, while 22% strongly disapprove, a 12-point margin. One reason is that her strong support
