New York—The MTA on Wednesday warned of potentially severe service cuts and fare increases should they not receive much-needed federal aid amid the coronavirus pandemic. “The survival of the MTA and the existence of millions of jobs in this region and across the country lies squarely in the hands of the federal government,” MTA Chairman and CEO Patrick Foye said at the start of the meeting.(Snip) Foran laid out many grim scenarios, including reducing service on subways, buses and the Staten Island Railroad by up to 40%. This could save the MTA nearly $880 million annually and result in the permanent loss

Why DO Blacks vote in droves for
Democrats in every election? 17 replies

Here’s a shocking number: Democratic presidential candidates have received an average of nearly 90% of the Black vote for more than five decades.
But why? Many Blacks live in big cities run by Democrats, and conditions there are pretty awful. What’s more, once Democrats get into the White House, they don’t deliver for the Black community. During the campaign, the candidates promise they’ll do a lot. Then when they win, they don’t. Every. Single. Time. And yet election after election, Blacks turn out in droves to support the Democratic candidate. It’s not like Republicans haven’t been trying to woo them.

Nearly two dozen Bronx principals say they’d love to have outdoor classrooms—if only they didn’t have to worry about their students getting shot or picking up used drug syringes off the ground. The day after Mayor Bill de Blasio and schools Chancellor Richard Carranza crowed about turning city parks and streets near schools into classrooms amid the coronavirus, principals in the borough’s District 7 fired off a blistering letter.(Snip) “A few days ago, a woman was shot to death in front of one of our district schools,” the principals said—apparently referring to Patricia Vasquez, 25, who was killed early Saturday outside PS 1

Heavily armed civilians have been filmed protecting businesses in Kenosha after arsonists set buildings alight, torching much of the black business district Monday. In footage taken by a local reporter, a small group of men can be seen carrying rifles and wearing combat gear as they protect local shops. They deny they are part of a militia.(Snip) ‘I’m on your side but you can’t burn down your local businesses.’ Another adds: ‘We’re out here trying to protect residents, we’re trying to protect the innocent people and we’re trying to protect the businesses of the citizens out here.’

The line stretched a quarter-mile before the sun was barely up Saturday, snaking around corners like bread lines in the 1930s. But the hungry in Queens are today’s New Yorkers, left jobless by the coronavirus. Until the pandemic struck the city, La Jornada food pantry used to hand out groceries to roughly 1,000 families a week. Now, the figure tops 10,000. And volunteers serve lunch every day to 1,000—many of them kids with growling stomachs.(Snip) Seniors, moms and kids, singles—many immigrants from China and Mexico—wait for hours. They turn out in droves wherever, and whenever, the food pantry’s truck shows up.

The National Guard was called in to quell fiery riots in Kenosha, Wisconsin—as protesters defied a curfew to loot and destroy a mostly black business area they are supposedly trying to defend following the police shooting of a local black man. Democratic Gov. Tony Evers summoned 125 members of the National Guard Monday after protesters set cars on fire, smashed windows and clashed with officers in riot gear Sunday after the shooting of Jacob Blake. But that and a dusk-to-dawn curfew did not stop the city from exploding once again on Monday night—with blazes set near the scene of Blake’s shooting

It was the worst extremist attack in the Philippines this year. A regional military commander says at least 75 soldiers, police and civilians were wounded in the midday attacks in southern Sulu province. The bombings were staged as the government grapples with the highest number of coronavirus cases in Southeast Asia. Most of the victims were killed and wounded in the first attack, when a bomb attached to a motorcycle

After looters crashed through his floor-to-ceiling windows and stole $1 million worth of booze in May, Chicago-Lake Liquors owner John Wolf wanted to protect himself from a repeat occurrence. Like property owners throughout the world, he wanted to install security shutters on the outside of his building. The investment would not only prevent rioters from entering his store, it would protect his windows—which cost $50,000 to replace. But Wolf ran into a big obstacle: The city of Minneapolis has barred security shutters on building exteriors since 2004. Unlike St. Paul, which allows external shutters as long as owners request a permit,

A NASA-funded scientist has been charged with fraud and conspiracy, federal prosecutors announced Monday, saying he was working as a Chinese researcher at the same time he was taking U.S. government money. The FBI says Zhengdong Cheng hid his Chinese associations, including being part of China’s Thousands Talents Program that seeks to illicitly siphon U.S. research. If his involvement had been known, he wouldn’t have been allowed on the NASA-funded project. So he lied about his ties to Texas A&M University, where he was working and which had the NASA contract, the government charged.(Snip) The NASA research gave Mr. Cheng access
