An Edmonton man is facing an attempted murder charge after a woman was stabbed at a campground in northern Alberta.

On Saturday at about 8:30 p.m., Boyle RCMP responded to a report of a stabbing at a campground south of the Village of Boyle.

A woman was transported via STARS air ambulance to an Edmonton hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries. The male suspect fled the area and despite the use of the RCMP police dog services and the Edmonton Police Services’ Air 1 helicopter was not immediately found.

At about 5 p.m. Sunday, two members of the RCMP forensic identification services who had attended the scene were heading back to the Edmonton area. They spotted a man matching the description of the suspect walking on Highway 28 north of Redwater, Alta. Redwater RCMP were then able to arrest the man.

Ethan Cooper, 32, of Edmonton has since been charged with attempted murder. He was remanded into custody and is set to appear in Boyle Provincial Court on Tuesday.

Police are not searching for any other suspects and do not believe the stabbing was a random act.

Boyle is approximately 147 km north of Edmonton.
