Police rammed the vehicle with one of their own to make it come to a stop just east of Entwistle. A “confrontation” occurred between the 32-year-old driver and several police officers, ASIRT said. Three members of the RCMP Emergency Response Team (ERT) fired their weapons, shooting the man.

A medic provided first aid but the driver was pronounced dead on the scene. A loaded .22 calibre rifle was seized from the scene by ASIRT investigators.

ASIRT has been directed to investigate the circumstances surrounding the police shooting.

Investigators are asking anyone who was in the area of Highway 16 and Range Road 73 near Entwistle on Aug. 30, who may have witnessed the scene, or anyone who has information regarding the shooting to contact them. They are also asking anyone with video to reach out.

ASIRT’s mandate is to independently and objectively investigate incidents involving Alberta’s police that have led to serious injuries or death. They also investigate sensitive allegations of police misconduct.

Entwistle is approximately 103 kilometres west of Edmonton.
